Private wells around Dutchess County
Much of rural Dutchess County depends on private wells. New York Well Data, which compiles NYSDEC well completion records, lists 4,988 records for the county, with the most in Hopewell Junction (554), Red Hook (373), Poughquag (258), Clinton Corners (246) and Rhinebeck (243). It reports a median recorded depth of about 345 feet, so many Dutchess wells are drilled into bedrock, though depth varies a lot from one property to the next.
What a new well involves
A well contractor drills a borehole down to a water-bearing formation, installs casing to keep the hole open and seal out surface water, grouts the space around the casing, develops the well so it produces clean water, then sets a submersible pump, pitless adapter, pressure tank and controls. The well gets a sanitary cap above grade and a disinfection before use. A water test confirms the water is safe to drink.
Licensing
WellDrillingCosts notes that New York requires water well drillers to be registered with the NYSDEC, registration requires demonstrated experience and adherence to construction standards, and there's no homeowner exemption for drilling. Ask any contractor for their DEC registration number.
What it costs
WellDrillingCosts' 2026 New York page puts the average residential well at about $9,000 for a 200-foot well, with drilling rates of $28 to $68 per foot. Because many Dutchess wells are deeper than that, budgets here often run higher; New York Well Data, applying published per-foot rates to the county's median depth, estimates drilling plus casing at roughly $8,625 to $22,425 and a complete system at $20,700 to $34,500. Angi's 2026 data puts well pump replacement at about $973 to $2,822, averaging around $1,900. See the cost guide.
